The Best Way to Clean Light Fixtures

Cleaning light fixtures might not be at the top of your to-do list, but it’s an important task that can make a big difference in your home’s appearance and safety. Dust, dirt, and grime can diminish the fixture’s brightness and making them look dull.

But safety should be your top priority when it comes to cleaning fixtures. After all, we all know that water and electricity don’t mix well. With the right techniques and precautions, you can keep your light fixtures sparkling clean without putting yourself at risk.

In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Electric, we offer our tips on cleaning your lighting installation. If you ever need the expertise of a certified electrician, you can put your faith in the uniformed professionals at Mr. Electric.

Preparing for the task

Before you start cleaning any light fixture, begin by turning off the power to the fixture you’re cleaning. You can do this by switching off the light at the wall or, for extra safety, turning off the circuit breaker.

Once the power is off, allow the light bulbs and fixture to cool down completely. Cleaning a hot bulb or fixture can cause burns or even lead to the bulb shattering. It’s best to wait at least 10 minutes after turning off the light before you start cleaning.

The final preparatory step is to gather your supplies. You’ll need a soft cloth or microfiber cloth, a mild cleaning solution, and a step stool or ladder if the fixture is out of reach. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrub brushes, as these can scratch and damage your fixtures.

Cleaning ceiling fixtures and chandeliers

Ceiling fixtures, including chandeliers, can collect more dust and grime than you know. Start by removing the light bulbs and setting them aside in a safe place. This makes it easier to clean around the sockets and reduces the risk of damaging the bulbs.

Then, use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to gently dust the fixture. This will remove loose dirt and dust without the need for harsh chemicals. If the fixture has intricate details, use a soft brush or a can of compressed air to get into the nooks and crannies.

For stubborn gunk, use a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Dampen a cloth in the solution and wring it out well so that it’s just damp, not wet. Wipe down the fixture carefully, avoiding any electrical components.

After cleaning, use a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture from the fixture. Make sure everything is completely dry before reinstalling the light bulbs.

Cleaning wall scones and outdoor fixtures

Wall sconces and outdoor fixtures can also benefit from regular cleaning and are often exposed to more dust, dirt, and even insects – so they may need a bit more attention.

The steps here are similar but you will likely be dealing with insects and heavier debris. You will also probably have to remove and clean components like glass covering. For outdoor fixtures, you may also want to clean the surrounding area to keep the light looking its best.
